L'histoire de la lune est en partie écrite dans ses cratères. On voit ici un panorama lunaire pris de la Terre avec les grands cratères Langrenus, à gauche, et Petavius, à droite. Les cratères se sont formés lors d'impacts séparés. Langrenus s'étend sur environ 130 km, a un bord en terrasse et arbore un pic central culminant à environ 3 km. Petavius u200bu200best légèrement plus grand avec un diamètre de 180 km et présente une fracture distincte qui s’écoule du centre. Bien que l'on sache que le cratère de Petravius est d'environ 3,9 milliards d'années, l'origine de sa grande fracture est inconnue. Les cratères sont mieux visibles quelques jours après une nouvelle lune, lorsque les ombres accentuent le plus les parois verticales et les collines. L'image sélectionnée est composée des meilleures images vidéo parmi des milliers d'images infrarouges haute résolution prises au moyen d'un petit télescope. Bien que les montagnes sur Terre s'érodent dans le sol pendant un milliard d'années, les cratères lunaires Langrenus et Petavius u200bu200bvont probablement survivre encore plusieurs milliards d'années, peut-être jusqu'à ce que le Soleil se dilate et engloutisse à la fois la Terre et la Lune.
